Di Long (Earthworm); Pheretima Aspergillum; Pheretima
Liver, Spleen, Urinary Bladder, Lung
Earthworms have been a vital element of Chinese Medicine for centuries. Earthworms can be found in nearly all parts of the world because they can live in nearly all types of hydrated soil that contains organic particles. The Chinese pinyin name for earthworms is Di Long, and these worms are used in China and many part of Asia for their potent medicinal properties. For medicinal use, the earthworms are collected and killed. They are then eviscerated, so that they are washed clean of the viscera and organic components. The earthworms are dried and then used whole or powdered for medicinal use.
According to traditional Chinese medicine principles, earthworm is associated with the Bladder, Liver, Lung and Spleen meridians, and has salty and cold properties. It is said to clear lung heat, drain liver heat and clear heat in collateral channels.
The strong taste of Di Long can be offset by consuming with citrus fruits or other herbs.
