Dit Da Jow: The Complete Guide to the Ancient Chinese Healing Liniment
Dit Da Jow
跌打药 · The Ancient Strike & Fall Medicine
Born inside the Shaolin Temple. Refined by generations of master herbalists. Trusted by martial artists, athletes, practitioners, and anyone whose body deserves to heal completely.
A Thousand Years of Botanical Mastery
Dit Da Jow (跌打药) is one of the most storied healing liniments in recorded history. Born within the walls of the Shaolin Temple well over a millennium ago, it was created by monk herbalists to address the bruises, sprains, and trauma that intensive martial training inevitably brings. Its name, literally translated, means fall and strike medicine. Its purpose has remained unchanged across the centuries.
In China, this liniment goes by Dieda Yao or Dieda Jiu, the second term referencing the alcohol used as its carrier medium, employed externally only. Authentic Dit Da Jow combines 15 to 20 carefully selected Chinese botanical herbs, macerated in a glass vessel with quality vodka, and left to extract and deepen in potency over weeks, months, or even years.
Not just for martial artists. This is for anyone whose body sustains trauma, bruises too easily, or simply wants to heal faster and more completely than Western topicals allow.
(Shaolin Tie Die Yao Xiang Jing)
Translated: "Shaolin Strong As Iron Fragrant Essence Medicine", the classical name of the Shaolin formula that forms the root of authentic Dit Da Jow.
What Dit Da Jow Actually Does
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, pain originates from disrupted Qi and blood circulation. Dit Da Jow works by actively restoring that flow, dispersing the stagnation that causes injury, bruising, and chronic discomfort.
Rapidly disperses pooled blood beneath the skin, accelerating reabsorption of hematomas and visibly reducing discoloration within hours.
Stimulates healing circulation to ligaments and soft tissue, addressing both structural damage and attendant swelling and pain simultaneously.
Relieves delayed-onset muscle soreness, arthritis discomfort, and general aches by promoting unobstructed Qi flow through the meridian channels.
The core mechanism: invigorating and tonifying blood movement so nutrients reach damaged tissue and waste products are efficiently carried away.
Regular application eases fibromyalgia symptoms, poor circulation, Raynaud's syndrome discomfort, and shin splints in athletes and active individuals.
Applied before training it prepares tissues for impact; applied after, it accelerates recovery. Indispensable for serious martial artists and athletes.

The botanical compounds extracted through maceration operate at four distinct therapeutic levels, each addressing a deeper layer of blood stagnation and blocked energy.

Take the Jow Quiz →Brewing Your Own Authentic Liniment
The traditional preparation method is straightforward and deeply rewarding. What follows is the same process used for centuries, with careful modern guidance on materials and technique.
You need a large glass jar (5 liters is ideal), two 1.75-liter bottles of quality vodka (80 proof / 40% alcohol), and your herb kit. Glass is non-negotiable. Plastic containers leach chemicals directly into the liniment, compromising both potency and safety.
Transfer the entire herb kit into the jar. Quality kits come with herbs prepared to the correct consistency: some whole, some bruised, some partially ground by hand. This variety is intentional and essential for full-spectrum extraction. Avoid kits where everything is fully powdered.
Add both bottles of vodka until herbs are fully submerged, leaving 2-3 inches of headroom. This space lets the herbs circulate freely during shaking. Mark the liquid level on the glass so you can track evaporation over time. Any 80-proof vodka works; brand doesn't matter.
Seal tightly and shake vigorously for 1-2 minutes. Repeat every day for the first 3-4 weeks. This agitation (the maceration process) causes alcohol to penetrate herb cell walls, drawing active compounds and molecular constituents into the liquid. Consistency here is everything.
Keep the jar in a cool, dark location: a cabinet, pantry, or closet works perfectly. Direct sunlight significantly degrades potency. Similarly, keep it away from water heaters, furnaces, or appliance exhaust. Stable and cool is the goal, not necessarily pitch black or refrigerator-cold.
Your liniment will have meaningful efficacy within 3-4 weeks and can be used during this time. It will not reach full active strength until around the 6-month mark — the traditional aging threshold and the minimum we recommend for optimal results. The longer it ages, the more potent it becomes. Use a ladle, funnel, or turkey baster to transfer a working portion into a small bottle for daily use while the main jar continues to deepen in strength. Traditional formulas were often aged for years before use, and the difference is noticeable.

Why Authenticity Matters
The market is flooded with inferior imitations: plastic-bottled, pre-bagged, powdered with synthetic ingredients. Genuine Dit Da Jow stands apart. Here is what that difference means in practice.
We use whole and properly prepared herbs, never cheap herb dust or remnants. Powdered kits create sludge that impedes extraction and delivers only a fraction of the intended botanical potency.
We use a combination of preparation methods to achieve best results, chosen herb by herb. Resinous ingredients like Mo Yao and Ru Xiang are processed by hand using mortar and pestle — motorized grinders generate heat that can scorch these herbs and destroy the very compounds that make them effective.
Every herb kit is assembled by hand in small batches only when your order is placed. This ensures each kit arrives genuinely fresh — not sitting in a plastic bag losing potency in a warehouse.
By preserving the whole herb, you extract all active constituents, not just one isolated compound. Chi Shao, for example, yields five distinct constituents that work together to eliminate blood stagnation.
We follow historical formulas as closely as possible — which means including the animal and insect ingredients the classical recipes call for. Substituting plant-only alternatives changes the formula. We don't take that shortcut.
Our bottled liniments are aged from 6 months to 4+ years depending on the formula. Aging is not optional — it is how the bioactive compounds fully integrate and reach their therapeutic peak. The longer it ages, the more potent it becomes.

Application Guidelines
Used as directed, authentic Dit Da Jow has no known side effects.
A few guidelines to ensure safe and effective use.
- →Apply to pre-training contact areas 20–30 min before activity
- →Re-apply immediately after training or upon injury
- →Let air-dry rather than wiping; this maximizes skin absorption
- →Apply liberally and allow full penetration on injuries
- →For serious injuries, use a saturated cheesecloth compress wrapped with plastic film
- →Always apply downward, toward the tips of your extremities
- →Store and apply only from glass containers, never plastic
- →Wash hands thoroughly after application — some formulas contain pepper-based ingredients that can sting eyes or nasal passages if transferred by touch
- →For external use only. Never ingest
- →Do not apply to open, actively bleeding wounds
- →Consult your physician before use during pregnancy
- →Avoid without medical guidance if taking blood thinners (Warfarin, Heparin, etc.)
- →If winter dryness occurs, apply a moisturizer at bedtime
- →Never prepare in rubbing alcohol. It can become toxic with regular use and extracts poorly
- →Always patch-test a new formula first: apply a small amount to the inside of the wrist and wait 24 hours. Discontinue use and wash the area thoroughly if you notice redness, itching, swelling, hives, or any other signs of skin irritation
