Herbal Ice is applied as a superior alternative to ice for fresh injuries.
Plum Dragon Herbal Ice Liniment, 4 oz. bottle
The Herbal Ice topical liniment is made from the San Huang San (Three Yellows Powder) formula!
San Huang San - Three Yellows Powder - 4.5 oz.
San Huang San is a combination of 3 cooling herbs that effectively alleviate pain and inflammation in injuries. Unlike the ice pack that is used in Western settings, these 3 herbs, when used immediately after injury, help increase local circulation to prevent excess bruising, accelerating the natural healing process of the body.
We add 1 extra "yellow" herb to the original San Huang San formula recipe to further increase local circulation and reduce formation of hematoma. So, our San Huang San is actually "Four Yellows."
***Please note that the "cooling" herbs do not feel cool to the skin, but are categorized as "cooling" in Traditional Chinese Medicine. The Herbal Ice formula is meant to be used in place of ice on a fresh injury to help the body heal faster, not to "FEEL" like ice.
Ingredients, such as camphor and menthol, added to other commercial formulas to make them "FEEL" like ice are, in our opinion, not helpful to the body. The function of camphor and menthol are to trick the nerves of the skin so that they cannot send pain signals in the normal way. The "icy" feeling you get is actually the sensation of those ingredients overwhelming the nerves of the skin.
If you want to help your body heal your injury faster, use the Herbal Ice Liniment or San Huang San Powder, but do not expect an "icy" feeling.
If you want to just cover up the pain and trick your body, use other products containing camphor and menthol, but do not expect faster healing.***

To use Herbal Ice liniment: Liberally cover the injury with the liquid and rub into skin. Repeat as often as needed to manage pain and swelling.
To use San Huang San herbs: Set aside enough herb to cover the injury. Add Vaseline, egg whites, water or green tea until the herb powder has a thick consistency (many customers also enjoy mixing with olive oil). Coat the injury thickly with San Huang San and cover with gauze or paper towel and fix in place with an elastic bandage or gauze roll. Keep the bandage loose enough to allow good circulation but tight enough to ensure the poultice is snug against the skin.
