Pharmacological effects of Huang Qin
The main chemical constituents of Chinese Skullcap Root are baicalein, baicalin, wogonin, wogonoside, neobaicalein, acetophenone, palmitic acid, oleic acid, proline, benzoic acid, radix scutellariae enzyme, and β-sitosterol.
These abundant bioactive flavonoid compounds are located in the roots of Scutellaria baicalensis. Of these antioxidant flavones, Baicalin and Wogonin have been researched the most thoroughly. This research has shown baicalin to strengthen the natural defenses of the body against pathogenic invaders by interrupting the actions of cell envelope proteins.
Other primary pharmacological effects of these flavonoids, include inflammation modulating, immune system support, neuroprotection, and protection against free radical damage.
In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), Huang Qin (as well as Huang Lian and Hunag Bai) are commonly used to clear heat, sedate fire and dry dampness. Classic texts often describe Huang Qin to be most effective for Lung heat in the upper jiao.
