The Shanghan Lun, or treatise on Cold Damage Diseases, is a part of a traditional Chinese medicine treatise from the Han Dynasty. It is one of the  oldest complete clinical textbooks in the world and one of the  four canonical works of Traditional Chinese medicine, along with Wen Bing Xue, Huang Di Nei Jing, and Jin Gui Yao Lue
-
According to these historic Chinese medicine principles, disease is due to Shang Han (i.e., Cold) and Zhong Feng (Center Wind, literally, as Wind tends to affect the center of the body; often translated as “wind stroke”).
-
When shang han or zhong feng attack the body, it first attacks the Wei-Qi – This causes the pores to close or open, as Wei-Qi can no longer control them – These EPFs cause Wei-Qi to stagnate in the sinew meridians, causing cramping, aches and shivering.
