TCM Herbs for Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain

Chronic pain can often be caused by lack of blood flow and energy stagnation in the body as well as congestion/obstruction, inflammation and malnourishment according to Chinese Medicine. Internal and external Dit Da Jow formulas can help to create free flow of blood, energy (Qi) and nutrition in the body, especially at the site of an injury, and thereby treat pain.

These Dit Da Jow formulas will commonly use herbs that move the blood, regulate Qi, extinguish Wind and that are warm, spicy, damp resolving and exterior releasing.

In part one of this series, we will discuss herbs that regulate Qi and spicy/pungent herbs Exterior releasing herbs and how they work to help relieve pain.
When a person suffers from many life stresses and pain, Qi is often stagnant. If this person can help the Qi to flow more freely, they can experience relief of pain and increase in energy.

  • Ge Gen – enters the Spleen and Stomach channels and is said to have an affinity for the neck (shoulder). It is often used for muscular weakness and wasting as well as TMJ pain and pain in the back of the neck and/or shoulder. It has been shown to prevent bone loss in ovariectomized mice. (Wing Chun Anti-Contusion)
  • Chai Hu – enters the Gallbladder, Liver, Pericardium, and Triple Warmer Channels and is pungent and slightly cool. This herb is useful for those who experience high stress and/or irritability and for those with pain in the chest, subcostal and trunk areas. This herb has analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects. (Chan Ning Tong Iron Palm, Black Hand, Iron Goddess Hand Training Liniment)
