3 Winter Immunity Tips Inspired by Chinese Medicine

Let’s go beyond vitamin C tablets and hand sanitizer. Traditional Chinese Medicine offers many ways to live in tune with winter while keeping your immune system in tip top shape.

Here are 3 habits to try this month:

  1. Protect your Lungs.
  2. The Lungs govern immunity in TCM, and are the first line of defense against external pathogens. Exposure to cold air and damp weather can weaken Lung Qi quickly – and therefore your defenses. Block these “pathogens” by covering your neck and chest when you go outside and post-training (especially if you’ve been sweating heavily). Change out of damp clothes immediately and avoid cold drinks after workouts.

  3. Increase your Qigong practice.
  4. Movement prevents stagnation, which is a common culprit in winter illness. And while you may be highly active or an athlete, intense workouts every day can drain your energy, especially in winter months. Instead, work in more Qi Gong time to help keep blood and energy moving without depleting your reserves. Need guidance? Take our course, Qi Gong with Tomm Voss.

  5. Boost with daily liquid herbal extracts.
  6. From prevention to faster healing, liquid extracts are one of the easiest ways to support immunity in winter. They absorb quickly, are easy to take on the go and can be adjusted based on how you’re feeling. For general daily support, we recommend Nei Wei Qi, which can help boost your internal defense system.

Acupuncture Points for Winter Immunity

Self-Care to Strengthen and Support

Acupuncture (or acupressure) can be a great way to support your immunity in general. These points, however, work specifically to enhance Wei Qi, support the Lungs and protect your energy reserves so you can stay consistent through the season.

Massage each point in small circles 2-3 times each for 30–60 seconds daily, or after training.

  • ST36 – Zu San Li (“Leg Three Miles”)
  • Located four finger-widths below the kneecap on the outer shin. This is one of the go-to points for immune strength because it supports digestion, builds qi and blood and helps the body recover faster under physical stress.

  • LU7 – Lie Que (“Broken Sequence”)
  • Found just above the wrist crease on the thumb side of the forearm, in a small depression. This point strengthens Lung Qi, and therefore immunity. It’s especially helpful for preventing colds, supporting the respiratory system and protecting against illness after exposure to cold.

  • KD3 – Tai Xi (“Great Stream”)
  • Located in the depression between the inner ankle bone and the Achilles tendon. This point supports Kidney energy to boost your energy and immunity long-term. It’s ideal for those who are in training, recovering from illness or facing burnout.
